So you want to get into reading but don’t know where to start?

Many people want to dive into reading more books but feel a bit lost at the sight of those thick, intimidating ones. Don’t worry, though—I’ve got you covered with five simple tips that’ll help you find your reading groove.

Let’s get started!

1. Find What Catches Your Attention

Think about the stuff you love watching—movies, TV shows, or even YouTube videos. Got a favorite genre? Good news: there’s probably a bunch of books just like your favorite shows or films! If you’re all about superhero movies, why not try some graphic novels? Love watching cooking shows? There are tons of books filled with recipes and food stories. It’s all about finding what clicks with you.

2. Start Simple

Jumping into super complex stuff right away might put you off. Instead, look for books that are known as great starting points. If you’re curious about space, grab a book that introduces you to the ideas in simple terms. There’s no need to tackle the heavy stuff from the get-go. That would only make you disheartened and want to put the book down.

3. Take Baby Steps

If the thought of finishing a big book feels daunting, begin with shorter ones. There’s no rule saying you have to start with giant novels. Find something that feels manageable. As you get more into reading, you can gradually pick up longer books.

4. Fiction or Non-Fiction?

Some folks love stories that whisk them away to another world, while others get excited about real-world facts and ideas. What sounds more like you? If you’re not sure, that’s okay! Try a bit of both to see what you enjoy more. While your interest in both can be interchangeable, I started with fiction before moving to non-fiction predominantly, you want to find something to get you started and help you pick up the hobby.

5. Join the Club

One of the best parts about reading is sharing and talking about books with others. Look for book clubs or online groups that chat about their favorite reads. It makes reading so much more fun when you can share the adventure with friends or even make some new ones who also love the same books as you.
