Fishing the City of Dreaming Spires

About Josh
Apart from research, Josh has spent his whole life developing his fishing skills. He has caught fish in Japan, Slovenia, Australia, USA, and more, and would love to share his passion with you!

A New Way to Appreciate Oxford
Fishing in Oxford:
Oxford is known as an intellectual hub, with beautiful libraries, buildings and colleges. However, did you know that the rivers flowing through Oxford support a lively fishery?
Around Oxford, you can catch a wide variety of coarse fish! From chub, to barbel, to perch, and the occasional monster pike, fishing here is exciting and challenging!
While bait fishing is the most reliable, I normally spin or fly fish for these species, the latter becoming my preferable method of fishing these days (it is always quite a surprise to the locals, as normally people don’t fly fish here)!

The disclaimer
While I love fishing in Oxford, fishing in Oxford (city centre) is not world class fishing by any stretch of the imagination. However, for those who want to explore a new dimension of the city (and trust me there are many), fishing is definitely one way to do it! You also need your rod license and Abingdon and Oxford coarse fishing license, though these are relatively standard across the country.
Five Reasons to Fish w/ Josh
Having given you all the reason not to go fishing with me, why should you consider going fishing with me? I think there are still many good reasons:
First, you want to experience a new side of Oxford! Despite the crazy amount of research going on at the University, it can feel rather small and claustrophobic at times, especially if you are doing nothing but living in a library! Fishing helps me clear my mind and enjoy the peace and quiet of the local rivers.
Second, you want to get into fishing! You have arrived at Oxford and want to pick up new hobbies. Fishing, especially fly fishing, can be quite difficult to pick up, especially when you don’t know where or how to start! Josh is an experienced fisherman and can show you numerous tips and tricks!
Third, you are travelling and want to tick off coarse fish species! A lot of my friends from America are used to catching trout, but have never seen a chub, dace, perch, or pike before! Here, you can hopefully tick off a few species off your bucket list! My current PBs in Oxford: Pike (85 cm), Perch (22cm), Chub (30 cm).
Fourth, you want to speak to an Oxford student! Maybe you have a child who wants to get into Oxford or want to know what it is like studying here! What better way to get admissions advice/ learn about university life than a casual setting, like fishing, while out on the river? Josh also has experience helping students getting into top universities all around the world through his start up Logos Education!
Five, fishing is just amazing! Does this really need to explain itself?
